Hello! My name is Joseph and I have been playing trombone for 10 years. I have teaching for 2 years and I recently decided to join Musika. I am passionate about music and want to inspire people to love music as much as I was inspired by those before me. I am currently studying music education at WCU and have had many opportunities to learn and play. One of my greatest experiences as a musician has been the lesson I have taught. Not one person learns the same and that is great! I look foward to inspiring people in many different ways.
For the last 2 years I have been teaching private lessons at an elementary school and have been teaching group lessons when asked. During the fall I also have been a low brass technician for a local marching band. Finally I have played in many pit performances for local high schools. These opportunities have taught me a lot about being a teacher and a musician. I feel like it is important that teachers themselves never stop being the student and all these experiences, while humbling, have made me a better teacher.
For my beginning students I usually start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Then we move to the "Arban" book and eventually start working on solo rep. Another thing I like to implement is the breathing gym, which not only helps as a musician but can also assure you having clear lungs! I usually try to do fun things for example if my student is young I ask them whats their favorite pop song and I usually arrange it or find an arrangement and spend a lesson doing that, or even teaching them to learn it by ear.
To me, nothing is more satisfying then problem solving and that is what these lessons are. I help find the roadblock in the way of your student learning, and I give them the tools to fix it. As they practice more and more, they will start to figure out there own ways to fix issues. My favorite moments aren't during the lesson at the time, its the lesson next week where I hear the progress. Finally I love listening to ideas, or questions or suggestions of what we should play or what we can do to fix things. I hope to find what inspires them and help them continually get better.
