Bachelor of Music, Wright State University, Piano, Organ, Vocal

Wright State University Music Scholarship, Graduated Magna Cum Laude
Overview:
I began piano lessons at the age of 5, and organ lessons at age 10. I became the junior organist at Lagonda United Methodist Church at age 14, playing at the early service. By age 17, I became their principle organist and choir accompanist. Five years later, I also became the organist and choir director at Highlands United Church of Christ. I attended Wright State University on academic and music scholarships, and graduated, magna cum laude, in 2001, with concentration in organ, piano, and vocal. My first job was in the Jefferson Township schools as a middle school band and choir director.
In 2002, I became a full time piano instructor at the Columbus Conservatory of Piano. When Lagonda UMC merged with two other Springfield UMC churches to become Faith UMC, I was hired as the organist and choir accompanist. In 2014 I moved back to Springfield from Columbus and worked at the Wittenberg University Center for Music Development where I taught music classes and private piano lessons. I currently teach piano lessons at Trinity under the name of Joseph’s Piano, and at That Music Place in Springboro and Bella Musica in Miamisburg.
Some of my past performances include piano accompaniment for Ohio Performing Arts Musicals and the Clark State Community College Chorus. While in high school at Springfield Shawnee, I played the pipe organ at Wittenberg University’s Weaver Chapel. At Wright State I accompanied the Men's Chorale on piano and performed with the Wright State Orchestra on organ. I also played trombone in the Wright State Concert Band. I was invited to play the refurbished organ at the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, and played the new organ for the Pipe Organ Dedication at the Maria-Joseph Center in Dayton. I also give yearly concerts on piano and organ at Trinity UCC in Fairborn, OH.
EXPERIENCE
I began playing in churches when I was about13. Shortly after that, I became a full-time organist and choral accompanist. I have also directed choirs. My background was mostly concentrated on classical repertoire, but I am able to teach many different styles. After graduating from WSU, I taught for one year in the public school system, but decided it wasn't for me. I enjoy the 1-1 dynamic of private lessons much more. I taught private and class piano lessons at the Conservatory of Piano in Columbus and Wittenberg University in Springfield. I did this while continuing in my role as organist and, at times, choral director in Springfield. In addition to being music director at Harmony Creek UCC, I also teach lessons at my studio, "Joseph's Piano". I also contract teach at "That Music Place" in Springboro.
METHODS USED
My preferred methodology uses the Alfred series books, as well as the Faber Piano Adventure series as supplemental material. I use a combination of note names and intervals to teach reading skills. I also like to incorporate theory into every lesson. Once we have the basics down, I like the student to tell me what he/she would enjoy playing, and I'll do my best to incorporate that, or something similar to that. Also, I prefer that the student have access to a real piano rather than a keyboard. However, a keyboard would do in a pinch.
LESSON STYLE
I have fairly casual lessons. I want my students to have fun while still making meaningful progress. I don't turn pages just to turn pages. If there is confusion on a song, we review it for a few weeks. I also like for parents to take a hands-off approach. I feel it is not their job to teach their children piano, and what they say may confilct with what I say. It is important for me to understand what the student does not understand. The only help I may ask for is to make sure that practice does happen. I seldom ever say that practice should be timed, i.e. sit at the piano for 30 minutes no matter what. Instead, I assign a particlar song a certain number of times. At first, practice would probably take no more than 10 minutes. That time increases as the songs increase in difficulty, within reason.
