My name is Joseph E. aka TEGA, and I am a singer/songwriter from Dallas, TX also working to raise awareness for Sickle Cell Anemia, which is an autoimmune disease that I currently live with. I started singing at a young age, training classically, before learning more about jazz & contemporary styles at an Arts Magnet high school. Upon graduating i received an award as a Presidential Scholar in the Arts. I started songwriting in my senior year but it wasn’t until attending college that I took it seriously and pursued a career in original music. I grew up always listening to old-school R&B and hip-hop, due to my family background and experiencing life as a young black American, so this style of music has a big influence in my life. However, as I started teaching music 3 years ago I developed a love and a passion for helping students reach their potential in any area and genre of music, from classical to jazz, to coaching with original music and exploring the writing process.
I didn't expect to start teaching 3 years ago. It took me a year after graduating school to fully bring myself to the idea of teaching music, but as soon as I started I found a new joy of sharing music with others through learning. I began at a local music store in Dallas, TX in 2019 and it wasn't long after that I had a full schedule of both voice & piano students of all ages, different levels, and different ranges of style. Then soon after, I had students reaching out to me about trying online lessons, and that set me up to create my own studio. Now I've built up my teaching so that anyone can learn at any point in their musical journey, and I offer almost any style of music.
I cater every lesson to the individual, but I highly emphasize the use of exercises for everyone. For piano students, I love using the Dozen - A - Day books because they include many different 5-finger exercises that are really helpful in warming the fingers. I also will bring in the use of scales and chords, no matter what we're learning, so that students can understand playing music in any key. Once we've gone through this process, I'll move on to the specific song we're working on for the purpose of performing or recording. For voice students, I take everyone through the process of warming up by using the three parts of vocal production: Breathing, Phonation, & Resonance (or Tone). I always guide every voice student through each part by using specific exercises to understand the feeling of building their voice step by step. Once we've done all three parts as a warm up, I'll proceed by using the same exercises to guide the student on their repertoire. The goal is for the student to feel their most natural and prepared selves for the process of digging in to the music we're learning together.
Whenever I meet with someone, I feel it's always best to get to know them and ask them "why music?". From there it sparks a conversation, and we start setting goals - which is super important! This is how we check in with ourselves along the way to make sure that the student is getting the most out of their lessons. I will also ask them questions about their practice regimen (if they already have one) and come up with improvements to help them practice more efficiently. There are also handouts, video resources, and other materials that I like to provide to keep the student engaged in multiple ways - visually and orally as well as with reading and writing. At the end of the day, I always encourage the student to have fun and enjoy the process
