Bachelor's in Music Technology, Music Composition, and Music Theory from Keene State College
Overview:
My first experience playing music was in school band. I joined the 5th grade band playing percussion and have never stopped since there. My mother played guitar in church and when I started playing drums I was allowed to fill in when the regular drummer wasn't there. One day they asked me if I wanted to play bass. I gave a very emphatic "yes!" I picked up guitar shortly thereafter. When I finished with high school I knew the only thing I wanted to do was music. So I went to school and got a real education on percussion, bass (electric and upright), as well as recording technology and theory and composition. It's been a long road of fascination for me that I don't see an end to.
EXPERIENCE
I've been playing music for close to 20 years now. I have played in many different environments and settings ranging from church to rock to classical to jazz to theater productions. I am largely self taught, though I would not have progressed at the rate I did without the people around that I had. One excellent thing I think has helped my as a teacher is having learned many wrong ways to do things. I've certainly made mistakes over the years, but having that experience, I believe, helps me guide my students to the next level.
METHODS USED
When a new student comes in for their first lesson, I always make sure that they have a grasp of the fundamentals. Without the fundamentals it is very easy to develop poor technique that will at best limit them in what can be accomplished on the instrument, and at worst lead to pain or injury from playing. Once we are comfortable with the fundamentals I want to start making music with them as soon as possible. What music that is and what techniques and knowledge we get into from is entirely dependent on the students interests and desires.
LESSON STYLE
What I like most about lessons is working with the student towards the common goal of making them a better musician. That is done by reaching many smaller goals over the course of weeks and months and possibly years together. With that in mind, I like my lessons to be an open conversation between the two of us. That's why it's a lesson and not a lecture. I always encourage my students to ask questions and bring in material they want to work on or even a cool video they saw. I can't do anything as a teacher if I can't engage my students and make them want to learn.
