I'm a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. I graduated in 1985 from H.H. Lehman College with a Master's (MAT) in Music Education.I taught Music at E.R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn NY and retired in 2011. I taught Music and the Arts at Touro College in Brooklyn NY from 2004-2018. I presently moved to South West Florida. I have performed in numerous states across the United States in many different music venues performing Latin Salsa, Jazz and everything in between. I have performed in an OFF Broadway Show called The Tellin Man in NYC. I have two recorded CD'S in my name in 1998 and 2005. I have performed in numerous studio work over the years in my musical career. I presently am working in various Latin Salsa and Jazz groups in South West Florida.
My teaching experience dates back to the 1980's when I taught at the Bennett Private Music school in Brooklyn NY. I then began teaching Music in the NYC Public School system in 1985 and I also was an Adjunct of Music at Touro College in Brooklyn NY from 2004-2018. I love teaching music and sharing my passion of giving back to the next generation. I encourage regular practice and the importance of Music Reading and Music Theory. I see the fundamentals of music as a road map to understand how my students can not only perform on their instrument but also possibly write music of their own. I have a life time of Guitar Performance experience in various styles. I love teaching beginner as well as advanced students. I'm always looking to bring on new students of all ages.
For beginning students, I typically start with the Alfred or Mel Bay Method. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce other repertoire where appropriate. For students who have some experience, I will try to find out what the student is interested in, and direct my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging. For students who have some experience and want to learn how to improvise I would direct them accordingly. I have my own concept on how to improvise over Guitar chord changes or for Bass students I would instruct them how to create Bass lines over chord changes.
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music. My philosophy is that each student progresses at their own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Encouraging my students accomplishments helps fuel the desire to progress and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires my student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. I believe that every student has their own individual potential and to set the lesson accordingly.
