Double Major - Jazz Saxophone Performance and Jazz Composition
Hello, I am a saxophonist, composer, educator and multi-instrumentalist. I began playing the saxophone at age 12 and from the moment I first touched the horn, I was hooked. After becoming more familiar with the jazz language, I quickly became further immersed in the jazz scene back home in Dallas. During high school I performed in many jazz festivals, competitions and local bands that furthered my artistry and understanding of the music I am playing. Currently, I study at the Berklee College of Music, double majoring in Saxophone Performance and Jazz Composition. I have extensive knowledge of both Music Theory and the Saxophone. I have learned from many phenomenal and award-winning saxophonists, and enjoy passing on knowledge that was taught to me. Mentors include Godwin Louis, George Garzone and Ed Tomassi among many others.
I have taught many students about Music Theory, composition and the Saxophone, and have helped all of them reach new levels of fluidity on their instruments, gain deeper understanding of concepts, and develop more extensive knowledge of Theory, and how to apply it. It is a true pleasure to see my student succeed and have the ‘Aha’ moment when a concept that they were struggling with, morphs into something they don’t even need to think about. Providing mentorship and guidance for students, as well as helping them set and achieve both personal and academic goals is a true passion of mine. In addition to the saxophone, I also play the flute and piano. At Berklee, I am also employed as a core music tutor and have sessions with upwards of eight Berklee students per week, and teach concepts of harmony, ear training and fundamentals.
For beginning students I have a number of books, resources and methods that I utilize in order to keep the lesson engaging and enjoyable. For more advanced students, I typically have a lesson plan or a direction that I want to go after assessing strengths and weaknesses. For all of my students, I always ensure that we are learning and practicing music and concepts that they find enjoyable and is headed in a direction that they want to go, all the while still challenging them of course. It is my goal to have tailored lessons for each of my students rather than a "one size fits all" method.
I am a sixth semester student at Berklee College of Music, dual majoring in saxophone performance and jazz composition, and have studied with many inspiring professors as well as learned from many amazing educators. Since entering Berklee I have been able to not only study the material and concepts, but I have also gotten to study professors and how they educate students of all different backgrounds, all different levels of understanding, and how they navigate teaching a class with students who are all at different stages and levels of grasping material. I have been fortunate enough to have amazing mentors who I have been able to study with and infuse their teaching style with my own, yielding a conglomerate of strategies and tools to teach many students and help them in an individualized way, both in group and one-on-one settings.
