ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

BA, Trinity College, Economics No degree, Northwestern University, [Music]

Overview:
My journey in music took a couple of unexpected turns. As a youth, it was my intention to get a degree in trumpet performance, but life held a different path for me and I put the instruments away. Some years later, my wife- knowing how much I continued to enjoy music- suggested I take up trumpet again and I did, for which I'll be eternally grateful! I now perform in multiple ensembles in Westchester and Fairfield counties as well as in New York City in addition to maintaining a teaching studio where I can share my love of music.
EXPERIENCE
I believe teaching is one of the most important things I can do to 'give back' in music. I've had the great fortune of studying with some of the best trumpet teachers in the world. Being able to share my experiences, the challenges I've faced, and how I've addressed them with the guidance of those teachers and applying that to the specific needs of a student is incredibly gratifying. I first began teaching in High School and since my return to the instrument, have maintained a small studio practice with students of all ages and abilities.
METHODS USED
Every student is different, so in my view, every student will have a different path he or she takes- it's my job to provide the map. As such, there are some standard pedagogical tools I use- Arban, Schlossberg, Clarke, etc.- but I'll often customize certain things to create greater learning value and to address a particular challenge or musical interest. For beginning students, there's the additional challenge of learning a new language- musical notation, fingerings, etc. To address this sometimes I use flash cards, fun quizzes, and even donuts! The one thing I'm most insistent upon is tone. Playing the right notes is one thing, but music is about sound, so I emphasize making every note beautiful, rich, centered, and in-tune. I encourage my students to ask, "Am I making my best sound right now?" and work with them to answer, "Yes!"
LESSON STYLE
As a teacher, I try and strike a balance between structure and expression. And to that end, I believe a student needs to play trumpet every day- it doesn't have to be much, but because it's both physical and mental exercise, it's good to stay with it. For beginners and youngsters, 15-30min per day is usually a good target and as their expertise and enjoyment increase, practice time goes up seamlessly. With that foundation, it's much easier and more fun for me to work with the student to reach their goals! My job as an instructor is to take otherwise dry subject matter (think scales, and such) and find ways to keep it fresh and interesting to practice.

Joe is an amazing teacher with a lot to say about music and the trumpet specifically. I have to say I was a bit hesitant about an online environment for trumpet lessons in the beginning, but it works incredibly well. He helped me pick up the trumpet again after close to three years of not playing.

Joe is a great musician and working with him for his guidance has been fun! Each session also helps to elevate my appreciation for playing the trumpet and shaping my understanding of music.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
