I am a musician and artist based in New York City and surrounding areas. I have been playing and studying music since I was a child and have deep love and knowledge for and of the art form. I have taught guitar and piano primarily, but also studied drum set and composition and would be excited to take on a drums or composition student. I've had the opportunity to perform with many musicians in the rock and jazz tradition over the years, as well, as a solo performer, and am always composing and arranging music, or gigging.
I actually taught me first guitar lesson around senior year of high school, as I had already been playing guitar for about 5 years by that point and had garnered a small reputation as a skilled musician. I continued into college, taking on piano students focusing on theoretical analysis and fundamentals. After college I continued freelance teaching and have had many students succeed in creating and working in their own way. I love working with people have some experience, or none at all! The learning process is always exciting and there is an infinite amount to know.
If I am teaching children, I will mostly focus on fundamentals and developing finger strength or coordination for the instrument. I will try to instill the foundations of music while attempting to make it fun and interesting. If the student is an adult or has more skill level, I will let the student dictate the direction we go in, based on their desired skill level and interest. I am deeply interested by all genres and styles of music and I try to follow where the excitement is. Some of the best learning of music comes from deep listening, which in a sense, is what practicing music is all about.
I've found that after the preliminary work of getting a base skill set and familiarity with the instrument, technically proficiency, etc, it helps to let the student guide me in how i aid them on their journey and find where their passion is, in the great world of music. The most rewarding thing that can happen as a teacher is to see a student develop their own musicality and achieve their personal goals. I've had the privilege of studying under many great teachers through my life and I am always very pleased to pass on the knowledge I have amassed over the years.
Joseph has a particular expertise in and a contagious love for harmony and music theory. His keen ability to relate nuances of harmonization and compositional techniques from a wide range of musical styles in a fun and engaging manner has helped me improve my skills as a pianist and a composer. He has taught me how to approach listening to and learning new pieces with the mindset of a composer, whereas before I was limited to an approach of rote memorization and reading.
