Overview:
Born and raised in Austin, Texas, I began playing guitar when I was 8 years old. My love for music has deepened over time, and I feel it is important to share my knowledge and passion for the art with whoever is willing to learn. My earliest teachers taught me in a way that made music fun, rather than tedious, which to me is essential. I played in Jazz Band through middle school and high school, which opened my ears to another dimension of music. Since moving away from Austin, I have continued to play with various bands around New Orleans and Los Angeles. Though I am technically an advanced player, I plan on spending the rest of my life continuing to learn and improve musically.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience is primarily from instructing at a band camp for multiple summers. Working with beginner level middle school students, it was my job to help them choose songs to play, learn their individual parts, and help them rehearse as a band. Not only was it satisfying to see how quickly they improved through practice, but by the end of each session, the students seemed exponentially more motivated to pursue their musical ambitions. Additionally, I enjoy teaching songwriting, because music is a great emotional outlet once you learn the basics of creating an original song. I have also taught many of my peers how to play guitar or how to sing. Picking up an instrument for the first time can be daunting, so I've learned how to simplify things in order to make learning the instrument a more attainable and enjoyable goal.
METHODS USED
I've had the opportunity to take guitar and voice lessons from a number of great instructors, and have learned a multitude of great methods from them. When learning the fundamentals of guitar, I find it easiest to first learn through visually learning the hand shapes and hearing the different notes and intervals. The names of the chords and sight reading can come secondary once you have a basic understanding of how to play. In terms of vocals, similarly, I find it easier to sing naturally at first, allowing me to hear what needs work, then get into to the technicalities.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is relaxed but focused. Understanding that each student develops at his or her own pace, I am patient and willing to answer any questions as we move along. I will set a goal for each lesson, and provide material to practice in between meetings. It's important to me that I find out what the student's goals are to ensure we are heading in the right direction. Regardless of ability, I find it very important for students to learn songs that they know well and are personally enjoyable for them to listen to. This makes practicing more enjoyable, while my lessons can be shaped by their individual interests.
