Overview:
While I have worn a fair amount of hats throughout mylife: computer scientist, photographer, musician, practicing attorney - the desire to teach others, to pass on my knowledge and see others succeed as a result, has been a constant presence for me. One of my very first paying jobs ever in my life, was that of an SAT tutor, which I started at the age of 19. From then until I started law school at age 21, tutoring high school age students preparing to take the SAT was a regular part of my life, and where I gained valuable experience in being a teacher and a mentor to high school age individuals. However, after 2 years of tutoring, I was accepted into law school in New York, which was outside the geographic scope of the tutoring company I worked for. Around the same time as beginning my tenure as a tutor, I auditioned for my very first professional band (Vesper), and was selected, among 6 interested guitarists, to proceed as their newest member. Throughout the next 2 years, until moving to NY for law school, the majority of my extracirricular time was spent tutoring students, and practicing / playing shows with Vesper. In 2006, after moving to NY to attend law school, I discovered Musika. I applied to become a guitar instructor, and given my background of working 1 on 1 with many high school students over the past few years, and my experience as a guitarist to that point, I was accepted as a new instructor. Over the next year or so, I taught several young aspiring guitarists - from the age of 17, all the way down to the age of 4 - and truly enjoyed seeing each one of my students progress noticeably, week after week, in their ability to play. Since graduating law school, I have been focused on my career as an attorney, and for the past decade or so, worked as an in-house attorney at Google. After my two sons were born, though, the desire to once again be close to our family and friends in southern California eventially led me to say goodbye to Google, and move back - finally! - to the LA/Orange County area, after almost 20 years. I am now refocused primarily on being a musician. I've joined a fantastic original rock band (TruNorth), and am ready to once again share my passion for guitar by way of teaching others who would love to either start playing, or take their playing to the next level. With any luck, I can put my attorney hat away for a nice long while, and have one of my true passions in life - music, and guitar - be the main driver of my success.
EXPERIENCE
I've taught lessons to students since I was 19 years old, and music lessons to students since I was 22. Prior to the age of 22, my teaching experience was as a math tutor for the SAT, but that experience was invaluable in becoming comfortable with teaching generally, learning firsthand what techniques work best for teaching at a 1 on 1 level vs teaching a small group, how best to communicate material new to my students clearly and effectively, and to identify the need, when it arises, to spend a little more time on a given concept or topic. As a Musika guitar instructor, I've had students as old as 17, and as young as 4 years old, with pretty much every age in between, and that experiences has given me the confidence to be able to take on students of any age, and give them meaningful instruction that will guide their musical journey towards the goals to which they aspire.
METHODS USED
I tailor my methods specifically to each individual student's goals and current skill level. My personal goal is to progress each of my students as quickly and confidently as possible in the direction that he or she wants to go, whether it be becoming a great lead guitar player on electric guitar, or getting chords and strumming down so they can play their favorite songs, or being able to improvise over backing music. Once I meet a student and find out from them where they would like their guitar lessons to take them, I then develop a lesson plan just for them.
LESSON STYLE
I like to create a very warm, encouraging, relaxed and positive atmosphere for all my students. My teaching style is very much student-led in terms of goals and preferences. While I will create a general plan for each student to reach their particular goals, I never see my lesson plans as these rigid constructs that must be stuck to closely, and a guitar lesson may shift gears right in the middle of the lesson if I feel a student needs to spend a bit of extra time on one skill or concept before moving on, or if I find the student has picked up something much more quickly than expected, and we can move on to the next thing, or if the student asks a question that leads us to dive a little deeper into one particular topic that wasn't necessarily on the plan. I want my students to always feel like they are progressing towards the goals they have in mind, and at any given moment, be able to see the connection between what we are working on in the lesson, and where they eventually want to be.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
