My name is Joshua, I am new to teaching, but am very passionate about the guitar! I have been playing for the better part of a decade, have performed in ensemble groups, jazz bands, as well as local rock and metal groups! I do NOT possess a formal degree in music. I did however take music theory, as well as AP theory in high school, so I have a solid enough understanding of music to teach you or your child how to understand basic concepts! I currently spend most of my free time playing guitar, recording in my home studio, writing songs, and studying as much music as I can!
I do not posses large amounts of formal teaching experience, but everyone has to start somewhere, right? I have taught a few friends a handful of basic concepts on guitar, as well as some basic theory knowledge. I have had experience trying to teach younger children (under 10), and have found that most children that age have a hard time grasping theory concepts, as it involves counting in cycles and can become confusing for them. This is why I request 10 and up for age preference. I am new to doing this professionally, but if you're reading this I look forward to working with you or your child in a fun, constructive, and engaging experience that allows the student to develop full creative control, as well as a solid base understanding of their instrument and musical theory concepts!
I have found, especially for beginner and younger students (I.E. friends and family members I have taught), it is best to first see where they are in ability to play the instrument. From there, we work on correcting bad habits that develop from being self taught, things such as poor picking technique, finger placement, hand placement, minimal understanding of rhythm and basic theory concepts. Then we discuss what the student would like to learn, and after a solid foundation of basic concepts has been developed, I can create more personalized lessons from there! I love watching students grow as musicians and develop that same spark and love for the instrument, and music in general, as I have possessed for so many years! The gift of music is a wonderful thing to be able to share with someone!
For myself at least, music has provided me with a sense of higher purpose, as well as given me many lifelong friends along my own musical journey! My goal is to have each one of my students be able to have that same experience, in a way that is tailored to them and their needs! I feel learning is best achieved when the student has real interest in the material. My approach is to see where the student is currently at in their musical journey, see where they want to go, and guide them there in the most effective and engaging way possible!
