Hello everyone! My name is Josh S. and I am a fun, passionate, and driven music teacher who loves teaching students of all ages! I have been playing music for most of my life! In 2016, my passion for music led me to Belmont University here in Nashville, where I graduated their Songwriting and Music Business programs on the deans list. Throughout my time here in Nashville, I have had many incredible opportunities from playing shows with other amazing artists to recording in legendary music studios such as Ocean Way Nashville, where such artists as Beyonce, Garth Brooks, and Carrie Underwood have recorded! I currently offer a wide variety of lessons from voice, piano, & guitar, to songwriting and basic music theory!
During my time at Belmont University, I taught music part time, as the other hours during the day were spent on class material, creating music of my own, as well as further developing methods by which to teach. Towards the end of college I took a break from teaching to focus on my career as an artist/songwriter. However, during 2021 I decided to start teaching again, which has reignited my passion for teaching and desire to spread music to others! I currently teach part time, with my main focus being on individual, case-by-case teachings and lessons. I have found that every student has different interests/passions and it is my job to further develop them. I will cater to your specific needs, whether it be an instrument, singing, or songwriting, with a high emphasis on practice, especially for beginner students. Most of all, I will make sure to keep it fun!
Although my methods vary a bit depending on the instrument, the general plan is the same. For beginner students of instruments I focus first on fundamentals, such as finger placement, note names, what makes up chords & so forth (again with a high emphasis on practice). I will gladly print out hard copies of chord sheets, note names, songs with chord markers if desired, or can display these digitally! For beginner students of voice, I start by teaching proper breathing, different parts of the voice, warm ups, and assessing the students vocal range. After I can tell that my student has a base understanding of the instrument/voice, I will find out exactly what he or she really wants to learn, and then will develop a plan accordingly from there with goals along the way. I am comfortable teaching any genre of music!
As previously mentioned, my teaching style first and foremost revolves around finding exactly what the student wants to learn and develop. As he or she progresses, I will set attainable goals along the way for the student to reach and therefore understand that learning any instrument is attainable through practice. I have found that one of the most important things is that my students do not lose motivation and their passion for music. It is much easier, and much more fun, to learn music or anything else in life when we have a genuine desire to do so!
