Overview:
I am a Doctor of Chiropractic who has enjoyed music for over 15 years! I started trumpet when I was in 5th grade and quickly realized music could be a fun hobby, however, needed some help in honing my skills. I started trumpet lessons at the University of Minnesota when I was 16 years old and continued to take professional lessons after attending St. Olaf College. At St. Olaf I played in their top Band, Orchestra and Jazz ensembles. I am here simply because someone took the time to show me the way. I am here to do the same :D
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching trumpet after graduating from Chiropractic school and have loved every moment of it. I mainly go to student's houses for teaching purposes, however, it is also possible to come to my office and/or home office to develop your trumpet skills. I have been exposed to many playing styles, therefore, giving me a well-rounded sound and ability to teach at multiple levels. Whether it's learning about trumpet mechanics or wanting to audition for a top ensemble, I can show you how to succeed.
METHODS USED
For the first couple lessons I try to gauge how advanced students are in their studies. From then on, I choose material that is feasible and challenging so that students grow accordingly. A lot of learning comes from persistence and practice, so that is a must when it comes to learning with me! I try to find out what motivates the student and what makes them so interested in trumpet and go off of that. As much as I'd like to make them a better player, meeting them where they are at is top priority.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is simple! I make having fun the most important part, especially for beginners because no one wants to do anything that isn't fun! It was the same for me when I started learning tennis. I ensure first that a student has a general grasp on basic scales and mechanics that are essential for the trumpet and afterwards I like to look into other components of the trumpet such as intonation, trumpet concertos and more advanced concepts such as attacks, soft/loud, playing higher, etc. My teaching style is a combination of my experience at the University of Minnesota and St. Olaf College.
