I am an individual who has had many artistic expressions throughout my life. From voice to dance to instrumental. I began playing my viola when I was in 5th grade and have performed with both chamber ensembles and various orchestras. My music experience has opened doors for me to perform in community orchestras in Chicago, participate in well-known camps such as Brevard Music Center and Sewanee Summer Music Center. I am very stirred when it comes to the arts and the viola has had a great impact on my life.
I am a well-rounded individual; one of my skills is teaching. I am more of a leadership developer. This skill has transferred to music as well. I must say that I have had more performance opportunities than teaching opportunities for viola. The experience that I have for classical viola teaching has been beneficial to the student that started with the instrument. Learning a string instrument takes patience and PERFECT practice to excel. I encourage students to discipline themselves to practice regularly.
For beginning students, I typically begin with a small teaching about the instrument itself. Once that is complete I connect them to the All For Strings. After the student has gone thru the book series, I will introduce more scales, etudes and maybe solo pieces to work on. If the student, is not connected to an orchestra he/she will be guided on how to get started in that phase as well. The orchestra phase can also be introduced early depending on how quickly they learn the material. From there they can get connected to a local orchestra.
I do enjoy building my students. Learning a string instrument is challenging so I encourage students by encouraging them to view other professional players, encourage the excitement of playing in orchestras, motivating them to hang in there until they succeed on that challenging piece. I give students the opportunity to play along with me as they also play the passage themselves. I love training; so I don't come to rehearsals to perform, but to equip the student for it. As any teacher, I always give homework assignments that must be brought back to the next rehearsal.
