I'm a very driven person with the patience necessary to teach people how to play songs. in 2010, I began playing guitar casually. In 2015, I started learning music theory, which allowed me to write music and be a crucial part of a band, which I am still currently in. Performing in places like Pontiac, Michigan for Dirt Fest and the Machine Shop in Flint has allowed me to develop stage presence and play to a crowd. I have the pleasure of being around band mates and friends that are involved within music education and teaching, so I never stop learning.
I have been teaching since February of 2019. Beginner high school players, more specifically. Working with absolute beginners has given me the tools to be patient with someones success. Everyone learns at a different pace. I am strict in my methods, but casual in my demeanor. No intimidation, no rushing, only my care for your progress. I want my students to understand that it's fun, though sometimes difficult. Ultimately, I love seeing people light up the more they learn. It's a tedious process, but the reward that you take away by improving a students playing is priceless.
If you are a beginner, we have to start with ergonomics, playing positions, small details that are crucial to beginning. Pick holding, finger pressure, hand strength building. We will take a theoretical approach once a beginner can play songs. Chords and fret board positions hold precedence first. There will be tablature, printable chords. If you are intermediate, we will get into more advanced technique and theory after judging your skill level. I personally use programs such as guitar pro to write exercises that a student may benefit from.
I approach teaching by making sure students are at ease. This has to be fun, yet disciplined. Understanding that you have to set goals for yourself beyond personal lessons is crucial. Praising students during lessons is a must! Build self esteem. Everything is at YOUR pace. I knew that I loved teaching when I encountered my first few students. My friends wouldn't describe me as the most patient person, but when I'm connecting to students through music, it's as if I could spend endless hours explaining nuances.
