Hello! I am passionate, dedicated, energetic, and compassionate educator and performer who loves working with students. I hold a Bachelor's degree in both Piano Performance and Political Science from Skidmore College, and a Master's degree of music in Piano Performance from the Mannes School of Music. With parallel interests in music and social justice, I believe that a music education should be accessible to all, and my goal is to make music lessons exciting, engaging and fun! As a performer, I have been fortunate to perform throughout the United States and Argentina, as a soloist, chamber musician, as well as in interdisciplinary performances.
My teaching experience has been quite varied, with ample experience teaching private students and group classes of all ages and ability levels. I have taught privately for more than 10 years, and have always encouraged a supportive, compassionate, and engaging learning environment. Most recently, I was awarded a Teaching Fellowship at the Mannes School of Music, where I was fortunate to be a professor of piano for undergraduate music majors. I have also held a teaching residency with the New York Philharmonic. Though I challenge my students to reach their full potential, my main goal as a teacher is for students to enjoy weekly lessons!
My methods are largely dependent on each individual student - their own learning styles, goals, and interests guide the methods I use. For many of my beginning students who are children, I start with Faber's piano adventures. I use a mixture of method books, repetoire, and my own theory exercises until students can grasp solo repetoire. I also help students compose their own music, which we have fun doing! For adult students, I tailor my lessons to the student's goals. For beginner or intermediate students, I teach a mixture of jazz and classical styles, and make sure they are able to play any repetoire they are interested in. For more advanced students, I am able to diagnose any technical/interpretive issues, and work together with the student to fix them. My main goal is to make sure students are having fun, are engaged, and excited to learn!
As a teacher I aspire to challenge and engage all of my students in a safe, supportive, and compassionate learning environment. With my energetic, sensitive, and enthusiastic demeanor, I seek to motivate and engage my classroom in teaching methods that reflect the unique and individual needs of each student. As a life longer, I also yearn to consistently grow and evolve as an educator, by embracing new techniques and perspectives. With a focused and patient approach, I hope to evoke the same excitement and enthusiasm that my teachers have elicited from me.
My son has been taking lessons with Josh for about 2 years now and absolutely loves him - his approach is kind and caring, and I would absolutely recommend him to any new students.
Josh has been a phenomenal piano instructor for my 7-year old son Connor, who showed an early interest at age 2 and began private lessons at 3 and a half. Due to COVID, he was he was held back by ~2 years. However, under Josh’s guidance over the past 9 months, Connor has grown rapidly, performing his first recital flawlessly without looking at music sheets. Josh not only inspires him to learn and play better in every single lesson but he also encourages him to enjoy and have fun while he’s at it. Josh is extremely patient, positive, and effective in refocusing Connor’s attention during lessons. We can’t wait to have Josh teach our younger son when he is ready next year!
Over the past 2 years, Josh has been an incredible piano instructor to my two sons. Josh is positive and patient, and has made lessons enjoyable for them both. I have seen an incredible growth not only in their ability to play the piano, but also in their overall confidence. We can’t wait to keep working with Josh!
