BA, Towson University, Music - 2010
I believe that music breaks down barriers, motivates people, and challenges individuals to work hard to achieve great things better than many other activities. I graduated from Towson University with at Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with trumpet as my primary instrument. I work as a Worship Pastor at a church in Baltimore, Maryland.
Before moving to Nashville, Tennessee in 2010, I had taught trumpet lessons for 3 years for many different students. What I found during that time is that every child is different, every child has struggles in one area of music or another and that making progress involves practice and enjoying lesson times. I encourage students to work with the SmartMusic software and seek out music they enjoy to help them stay motivated.
Every student begins with the basics, warmups, exercises, and fundamentals are the building blocks of music and must always be reviewed in order to continue progressing. For beginning students, I use the lesson books they are working on in school in order to help them as they work with their teacher. I also introduce exercises, and solos. Mainly, each student is different so the style of teaching and choice of music will vary between students. For intermediate students, we work through various solos, techniques, scales, music the student may want to learn, and audition pieces for college, all county, all state, etc. I also encourage each student to learn a solo or two to play at a recital each year.
I am an energetic teacher, I move quickly but know that students learn at different paces. So, I work on encouraging students to set goals, and helping them achieve their goals. I work to ensure the student is engaged and try to find out what motivates them to succeed. I also expect that each student prepares for their lesson each week.
