Hello! My name is Joshua M. Originally from Charlotte NC, I moved here to attend Morehouse college, where i graduated in 2017. I recently graduated and completed my Masters in Music Education from UGA. I have been a member of concert, jazz and marching ensembles for 14+ years. I had the opportunity to be apart of many mass ensembles, a student director and conductor as well as a Drum Major for 3 years. Currently I serve as the Associate Director of bands at Morehouse college. I am excited to assist my students in taking their crafts to the next level!
My teaching experience started when I was in Highschool , and this has carried on throughout college and after college. I tutored my peers while still learning other instruments simultaneously. I have had the opportunity to teach at a number of elementary, middle and high schools in the atlanta and atlanta metro school districts. I have also had a number of opportunities working with adult choirs as well as community choirs and bands. Currently I am developing a marching band curriculum that is for Middle School ages through College.
My methodological procedures are determined solely on the level of the student and their performance ability. Oftentimes I tailor lessons that i’ve created in my past to create lesson plans for individual students. I oftentimes use action research methods in helping me determine whether or not the teaching method that is being used in the lesson is effective for the student receiving lessons. For larger groups or smaller ensembles I create lessons around whatever the end goal is and/or the performance requirements.
I encourage the individual to find what they love about what they're doing to spark growth and personal development. I use real world scenarios and applications for my students to relate and apply their learning through the playing of their instrument. From my pedagogical teachings i’ve learned that the best approach is a differentiated one. One that is diverse yet unique to the learner and/ or group of learners. I use a linguistic and analytical yet methodological approach to teaching that I find to be VERY Efficient!
