I am a highly experienced classical music performer. From playing 4 years at Aspen Music Festival and School to extensive experience in performing professionally in the tri-state area, I have honed my skills as a performer and played in prestigious halls across the globe. I also have a background in electronic music production and djing and own a music label in Chicago. I have also been playing piano since I was 5 years old, competing in state competitions and performing in recitals. For my senior recital in high school, I had a joint percussion and piano recital at the Wisconsin Conservatory of music.
I have been teaching privately for over 15 years now and absolutely adore my students. They teach me just as much as I teach them. One of my true joys in life is giving back the knowledge that was imbued on me from an early age. I like making the music fun, encouraging students to "play" rather than "practice." Integrating music they love into lessons is also a great tool, in my experience. It's all about enjoying the journey! Music has been such a joy in my life and I would like to give that joy back to each and every student I encounter.
For drumset students, I usually start out with basic patterns and grooves that they can play to their favorite music. That way they really start to get into it. After we have established a bit of rapport, I will go into technique and see what their tolerance is for more intensive practice and more in depth techniques, all the while trying to keep things light and fun. While technique is important, we would like to make sure the student stays interested in the material and keep their attention with engaging material.
I like to set realistic goals for students so that they can feel accomplished. I also find it's great to get an idea of exactly what they would like to play. For instance, if they love ACDC, picking a simple song like Back in Black to play and work up to something like Thunderstruck. It is important not to push them too hard. Nothing more gratifying than achieving a goal and receiving praise for it. Every student is different--I have even used Goldfish as motivation with a past student! In addition, I like to be a friend and sounding board for them to come to me with their every day life problems. I find that being teacher is not only being a coach, but a friend in times of need.
