Master's of Music Education (In Progess) - Hunter College
Bachelor's of Music - Purchase College
I am a musician based in Brooklyn, NY. In 2018, I graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Conservatory of Music at SUNY Purchase with a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Performance. As a performer, I have played with folks like Ingrid Jensen, Jon Faddis, Dick Oates, Ann Hampton Calloway, Steve Davis, and Bryant Wilder at venues such as the Blue Note, Birdland, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the Cutting Room. As a session player, I have recorded with artists such as the Lemon Twigs, Peaer, and Abhi the Nomad. As a producer and composer, I have released 6 records and contributed music to commercial campaigns for Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Shingrix, and John Deere.
My teaching experience began when I was in college. I began teaching flute, clarinet, and saxophone lessons out of a music store in Upstate New York in 2016. This time was largely spent with complete beginners on their instruments, and it was incredibly rewarding. I focused on a balance of fundamentals like scales and long tones, formal repertoire such as classical and jazz pieces, and time for whatever the student was interested in whether that be pop, hip hop, or rock music. In 2018, I added piano, guitar, bass, and music production to my roster of subjects covered, and I have followed suit with an ever evolving version of the same process since.
For absolute beginner students of any age, we begin outside of a book as the best way to learn is from personal experience. With wind players for example, we work on breathing, posture, and hand position as these three components help students produce a quality sound in as comfortable of a way as possible. Moving into more formal studies, I used the Standard of Excellence series for young children and the Rubank series for more intermediate students. For advanced students, I focus on fundamentals and repertoire. For all levels, I incorporate the students interests. If you want to learn pop, hip hop, or rock music, you should be encouraged to!
The best thing I can do as a teacher is help you realize the path of least resistance for achieving your goals. So, I have developed a style called the Dotted Line Approach. On the first day of lessons, we will discuss both short term and long term goals. Following this, we will develop a roadmap with smaller goals for each week, month, 3 months, and year. Each month, we will revisit your goals, discuss what is and what isn't working, and make plans to stay on track towards meeting your goals. Together, we can grow.
I studied piano with Josh. The most impressive thing was how he worked on my ability to teach myself. I left his studio able to diagnose issues in my playing and fix them all on my own.
