Overview:
I am a recent graduate of SUNY Purchase that has been teaching for over 5 years. I am new to the New Jersey area, I just moved from Albany, New York and I bring with me a desire to teach and inspire students to be creative. I have a degree in music performance and a degree in Jazz studies. I am very passionate about jazz, it’s history and all forms of improvised music. I am passionate about learning and making connections through music that can relate to our own individual lives. I look forward to meeting new students!
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching for 5 years in both private lesson situations and and group lesson situations. I enjoy teaching beginner piano and flute and teaching all levels on the clarinet and saxophones. I have taught in both the classical and jazz idioms. I have taught as young as seven and as old as seventh and I enjoy seeing what curious students bring to the lesson. I teach both by ear and reading music. I have also tutored in both ear-training and music theory and I can be helpful in engaging students to the music and having a better understanding of it.
METHODS USED
For beginner students I focus on the fundamentals; developing a sound and technique to allow them to be creative. I mix in ear-training with all of my students through different ways of connecting them to the music. I allow for all of my students to express their creativity through improvisation and all students are encouraged to reach creatively. I look to engage with my students in any way that relates with them. More advanced students are guided to transcribe and learn material from many different aspects of music.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style revolves around the students’ needs and desires in the music. I like to have a balance of exercises that are centered around developing technical facility and developing the ears of the students. Each student is assessed on what they wish to learn and their own capabilities. I like to give a push into a direction that challenges my students but still allows for them to benefit from and enjoy the music. I like to keep my students engaged in the music by allowing them to make it relatable to music that they enjoy.
