2020 - Summa Cum Laude 4.0 Graduate
My name is Josh Miller, and I am different. Music is the calling that God has placed on my life, and I will teach it with passion. I am a graduate of Louisiana College with a Bachelors of Arts in Music and Worship Leadership. This represents 4 years rigorous musical training in music performance, theory, and history. If you want to be more than typical, if you want to know both HOW music works and WHY it works that way, if you want to stand out from the crowds of musicians out there, then come with me; we will change the world!
I have been involved with music since middle school, where I participated in marching band. I continued in marching band up to my junior year of college. In high school I began working with my church's worship team, first as a percussionist, then as an acoustic guitarist. I began training in basic music theory at this time as well. I also started to use GarageBand to record songs. Shortly before I graduated, I started to teach myself piano. And then came college. College sent me on a wild journey of learning in all aspects of music. I began to gain proficiency in all of the instruments I played. I learned to lead others. God changed me in unimaginable ways. And now He has made ready to teach others.
We will begin by becoming acquainted: how does the student learn (auditory, visual, tactile, kinestchetic)? what are the student's goals (college training, worship arts, or just a hobby)? I mold my teaching approach to best serve the student. We will take teaching step by step, spending extra time wherever it might be needed. In regards to resources, we will use free internet-accessed and/or homemade resources. This also allows for a personalized approach. If the student has any desired materials or songs, that is perfectly acceptable! Every student is different, so I am flexible and desire to meet students where they are in order to take them where they never thought they could go!
I passionately teach the inner workings of music, not only HOW it works but also WHY it works that way. If the student is able to learn the reason why music works the way that it does, then the only limit is his or her imagination! I desire to teach the purpose of music: why do we make music in the first place? What power does it have to influence people? How to we use this power rightly? Lastly, I teach discipline with direction. Without the student's self-discipline of practice, there will be no growth. The student must be diligent to practice. Now, this practice must always have a purpose and direction. Author Donald Whitney says that "Discipline without direction is drudgery" (Spiritual Disciplines For the Christian Life). I want to help the student see the end goal of his or her hard work!
