I am an enthusiastic, compassionate, energetic teacher who loves teaching voice and piano! I love building enthusiasm for music of all types and genres! In 2022, I graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with high distinction in Vocal Performance. I have had opportunities to perform in venues like the historical Old Cabell Hall, the Kennedy REACH Center for the Arts, the PowerStation recording studio, the Cutting Room, and Green Room 42 (two historic venues in New York City). I use this experience to work with my students and help prepare them for performing opportunities. I am currently getting my master's degree in Writing Musical Theater from Berklee NYC.
My teaching experience dates back to my undergraduate experience, where I vocal and music directed 6 student theater productions. This includes providing one-on-one vocal instruction for leads and ensemble members and teaching full vocal scores to ensembles of over 20. I was also the music director of my A Cappella group, so I have experience auditioning, training, and rehearsing a cappella singers. I am also a trained pianist and accompanist, so I provide tracks for students virtually and live accompaniment for in-person lessons and use these skills to provide piano lessons. I have played piano for masterclasses with Broadway Actors such as Ciara Renee. As well as played piano in a masterclass with Musical Theater Writer's Ahrens & Flaherty.
My voice lessons always include a warmup for the first 10-20 minutes going through different exercises for range expansion and different vowel shapes and then will focus on either one or two songs that we will work on over a period of weeks for the remainder of the lesson to apply the concepts we learn in the exercises to the songs. I am a classically trained vocalist who primarily writes and focuses on the intersection of classical and musical theater. However, many of my students work in the pop realm. I apply a classical vocal methodology to pop technique so that students can make active vocal decisions in a stylized environment based on genre. My piano lessons are structured similarly starting with warmups/exercises depending on the student's skill level and technique we are learning. This can include different things like playing scales, or other finger exercises to develop dexterity in technique. After spending some time on technique we would spend the remaining time in the lesson working on a classical piece, or piece of the student's choice. Sometimes both, time permitting.
Vocal: I meet students where they are, working on some repertoire they select while throwing in some of my own selections. My students generally focus on vowel shape, vocal placement, breathing technique, and expanding range through knowledge of the head, chest, and mix voices (including belting). I am open to what students want and will generally be willing to throw out a lesson plan if that plan is not working for the student and try something new or different. However, in specific moments I am willing to push a student out of their comfort zone to get them to learn something new. Piano: I am not a stereotypical piano teacher! I am very nice, but will also tell you what you need to hear. Especially with beginner, or younger students I think it is important to increase enthusiasm for the instrument while giving students the tools they need to continue pursuing higher levels of technique and understanding. This means that I am open to helping students work on the repertoire they want to work on, and teach them through the songs they want to learn, while also pointing them to material that will help them develop.
As a West End music director, I firmly believe Joshua has a grasp of vocal teaching and pedagogy so rarely achieved. I have taken lessons with him myself and find his teaching style to be engaging, effective and respectful. I would not hesitate in recommending him to any clients or colleagues who require vocal instruction.
I have started my lessons with Joshua over a year ago. he has been an amazing teacher, and I have improved dramatically over this time. when I started I could not sing almost at all, and now I am a lot more confident in my abilities. Josh helped me with finding my own style with singing, and he even gave me exercises to practice outside of lesson time, and checked them. I felt like I could send him a voice recording anytime, and he would respond with a lot of patience, respect and commitment to the process with me. Thank you Josh!

Josh is an absolutely incredible voice teacher. Through lessons with him, I have been able to unlearn some bad singing habits I picked up in the years I took a break from vocal lessons. I feel much more confident singing higher notes than before and with extensive work on breath support, my sound is much fuller and supported. He does an excellent job of tailoring lessons to prior experiences or individual preferences. He always weaves real-world examples into the lessons when going over song structure, rhythm, or other aspects of music theory. That combined with using visual aids to teach have been essential to my learning. Josh is very enthusiastic and brings incredible energy to every lesson. I highly recommend choosing Josh as your teacher, you will not regret it!
Very kind and accommodating teacher. Josh is incredibly patient and works with your personal needs. When I was having some pain, he worked with me to avoid possibly exacerbating an injury. I can barely read any music and don’t know much terminology, but he is still able to talk me through exercises and gradually has taught me so much about singing and music in general. He gives a good amount of feedback, both constructive and positive. Definitely has helped me to improve my vocal health and performance!

Josh, Just wanted you to know – I was working on one of my songs today and a line in the lyrics made me think of you – “You found the light in me that I couldn’t find.” Before my lessons, I had been resigned to turning from a kid who loved to sing into an adult who hated the sound of her own voice. But because of your instruction, supportive approach and encouragement, I’m developing the skills to enjoy singing my old favorites, as well as cultivating the courage to take on new challenges -- even Lady Gaga. Thanks for letting me set the bar higher than I dreamed possible, and helping me hit it. - p
