My name is Joshua. I am a 26 year old pianist who has been playing for 20 years. I am an experienced teacher, performer, and composer. I play around town in a Jazz duo, as well as in a 3 person band. I have been teaching for over 5 years and enjoy helping my students expand their mind and reach their goals for musical education. I like to find a piece from a composer or recent artist that the student enjoys so that we can balance the more tedious elements of the lesson with something fun. I make lessons fun and about what you want to learn, all while making sure we attain progress!!!
I started teaching about 7 years ago independently. This has grown to me working with multiple companies as a teacher, as well as maintaining my private students. I also work around town in music studios as an audio engineer, so music is my entire life! I have a lot to show my students and help them grow with experience unique to me. I teach all ages, with my current and past students ages ranging from four to sixty three! The genre we explore is totally up to you! I don't like to tell my students what type of music they will be learning because it is about what you enjoy personally!
For younger children, my methods involve using the Alfred series as the staple of the course, but I also incorporate games and some other things into the lesson to make it fun. For intermediate and Advanced students, it is a completely customized lesson plan to the individual so I can't really say what direction we take before I have had the chance to sit down and analyze their individual needs. In general, I try to have a curriculum that balances music theory, ear training, sight reading, and song structure into the lesson plan. The only common trait you will see with my method is progress!!!
My style involves around having a "recital" piece that we work on at all times, as well as technical exercises and different games to increase music theory, rhythm, sight reading, ear training, etc. We set goals and work to accomplish them in a timely manner. I always take time to make sure you as the student are comprehending what I'm explaining to you. Some technical instruction is done with arpeggios, scales, chords, etc., but in general, I try to keep the lesson as interesting as possible so that we can have fun while learning!
