I am a passionate musician and actor and I want to share my joy of the arts with the world through performance, education, and collaboration. I am originally from Denver, CO where my music journey began. At the age of 5, I began taking piano lessons. A few years later, I began to branch out into drums, inspired by my dad who is also a drummer. This led to many ensemble settings for two decades, including jazz band, symphonic percussion, marching percussion, and rock bands. Alongside my instrument pursuits, I also honed my vocal training through musical theater and A Cappella. To expand even further, I bought myself a ukulele! Music is about exploration and joy, and that's what I want to share!
As the musical director for my college A Cappella group, there was an element of vocal teaching for new and existing members. We learned new song arrangements as a group, rather than assigning parts and having singers learn at home. Conversely, they taught me! It was a great collaboration. Most recently, I have taught private and large group lessons for elementary grade students (TK-5th) in the areas of ukulele, drum set, bucket drumming, hand drumming, and rock band. My two rock band classes this Fall will be learning Eye of the Tiger and Seven Nation Army, which we are all very excited about!
For beginners, I firmly believe in establishing strong fundamentals. However, you can't spell fundamentals with out "fun"! So, even while building fundamentals, music lessons should be fun and geared toward what the student wants out of all of this. Whether that's learning a specific song, style, cool musically visual trick, or just jamming, I'm here for it all! Musical journeys are specific to the individual and therefore there is no one path that all students must follow. I cater my teaching to the student!
My teaching style is goal-oriented and centers on positive reinforcement. This should be fun, not a chore. I love creating weekly/monthly/yearly goals so the student has something tangible to work towards. That might be a showcase for parents, a more formal recital, or an audition for a group! Each student brings a unique perspective to the lesson room, which is what makes it so exciting for me. No two students are the same, which mean I can learn something from the student as well. This should be a collaboration and above all, joyous and exciting!
