I am an experienced and motivated musician who has a passion for teaching and collaboration. I graduated with a minor in Jazz studies from the University of Florida in 2018 and have toured professionally with several indie and rock bands. I have experience teaching private lessons at home and in music studios. I love teaching and believe that I have a real talent for it and a passion for the instrument. I believe in practical approaches and practicing intelligently in musical contexts exclusively. Bringing music to the practice room is the funnest and most efficient way to practice. Together, we can take all the mystery and frustration out of the process and understand how to play with and for the music.
I first began teaching when I was in college. I had several students that would come to my home to take lessons with me. As I was studying drums at University at the time, I was able to know a good lesson and teacher from a bad one. After a couple of years teaching independently, I began working as a drum instructor for Studio Percussion of Music and Dance in Gainesville, Florida. I had many students who were mostly children. I discovered that I had a talent and passion for teaching the instrument. What sets me apart from most teachers is the emphasis I put on practicing with music in mind. I try to relate everything I teach back to how it can be applied musically in a way that excites the student. I love seeing students be able to play their favorite songs and become motivated about the drums.
My methods and practices depend on the goals and level of the student. For a beginner student, I like to start with a mix of genre-based learning and fundamentals. We will go over the most important and common drum beats that correspond to different genres, the most useful fills, and technical aspects such as posture and technique. Of course, we will use the student's favorite music to reinforce and learn these concepts. For more advances students, we will do some work with rudiments, orchestration, independence, groove, time signatures, etc. We will also come up with a practice plan and schedule to make sure the student realizes their goals. I have many materials and lesson plans that I have come up with throughout my teaching career and which are tailored to different levels and types of students.
I believe that every student is different and it is important for the teacher to be flexible and take their goals into account. Some students want to play in a band and deal with music and performance right away, and some students want to become very technically adept at the instrument. Above all, I believe it is important to be patient and to practice with a musical application in mind. I try to teach students what they want to learn and what I think will help them reach their own individual goals the fastest. With music, it's important to be inspired and have fun. Only this way will the students remain motivated,
I took lessons with Juan when I was in college and it was more fun than I expected. We learned by playing to my favorite music and now I feel much more comfortable on the drums. Definitely knows what he's doing and is a great teacher.
Very fun and relaxed. Highly recommend!
