2017-Yusef Salim prize for music excellence
I began my musical journey in East Orange, New Jersey, where Lauryn Hill and Whitney Houston also got their starts. In 2016, I earned my B.A in Music at Duke University, then went on to complete my M.M. in Jazz Studies in 2020 with focus in Vocal Jazz Performance at North Carolina Central University. At NCCU, I was a member of the award-winning Vocal Jazz ensemble that made it to the grammy ballot for best vocal jazz album in 2017. My studies and performances have taken me across the globe, and have put me in the company of performers such as Branford and Delfeyo Marsalis, Bobby McFerrin, Leslie Odum Jr., and Nate Smith. My style can be described as a fusion of classical, jazz, soul, RnB, and gospel genres.
For the last 8 years, I have been whole heartedly devoted to the nourishment of my craft and career. I am someone who believes in going all in so I have only been teaching full time since the pandemic started and part time for 2 years. It has been refreshing to go back to the basics for my beginners and help develop unique goals and repertoire for each student I have worked with. In my short time, I have worked with international students, a group lesson, a married couple, high school aged students and adults who simply want to dive in to specific interests like soul
I believe in acquiring a global understanding through a multiplicity of styles. Jazz and classical are my points of departure and then I incorporate different material as you develop your skills. I have several method books that I use including "Mastering Piano Technique", "Manual of Scales and Arpeggios", "The Jazz Theory Book" and "Harmony and Theory" by Keith Wyatt to name a few. For vocalists, I develop your sound to a point where we can do a full basic assessment of skills that we can build off of so we have a clear direction of where we are going. Music is a vast and limitless expanse. I spend time finding out where you are then sorting through all relevant material to get you to where you want to be .
I have a deep passion for the convergence of theory and performance, because I believe that understanding the theoretical reasons behind musical decisions opens up vast realms of experimentation and creativity. Consequently, my teaching style revolves around the marriage of music theory and performance, so that my students can learn how to build on the foundation that has been laid by the musicians who have come before us. I believe that it is the educator's duty to tailor his or her teaching to the unique learning style and needs of each student. As a music teachers, we have the ability to help his students succeed not only in the mastery of their chosen instrument, but in all academic disciplines. As long as the student is willing to learn, there is no obstacle that can't be overcome!
