BM, Dana School of Music, Flute Performance
I am an experienced and enthusiastic private lesson instructor. I've been teaching for over 30 years and it never gets old to me! I learn as much as I teach from every one of my students. I am a member of the Sinclair Community College Wind Symphony and the Dayton Philharmonic Concert Band. I enjoy playing orchestral, opera, musical theatre and band music. I also do quite a bit of music directing for many local area theatres. I look forward to answering any questions you might have.
Thank you very much!
I began teaching beginner students when I was 16 years old and have been doing it ever since. It's never seemed like a "job" to me. I enjoy the excitement of a first-time student making their first sound to sight-reading duets with more experienced students. I started a flute choir at a local high school and would love to start one of my own at my studio. Keeping things fun and interesting is vital to every student's success and I pride myself on getting to know each student on a personal level to achieve this goal.
I usually start with the Rubank Elementary Method book. There are four books in the series and they are very comprehensive. Once the student progresses to the Intermediate book, I also add Selected Duets Volume 1. I have found that playing duets strengthens listening skills and intonation, plus they are fun! Solo and ensemble pieces are introduced as the student becomes more proficient and various performing opportunities begin to present themselves. If the student is involved in a band program, I make sure they are comfortable with their schoolwork as well.
I tend to set my expectations high for each student while also taking the time to learn each student's personality in order to help them meet those expectations. I have learned through my numerous years of teaching that every student learns at a different rate but they can all achieve success. I believe in making my students comfortable. A relaxed atmosphere promotes an environment to ask questions freely. "Mistakes" are part of learning and growing! Regular practice is expected, but I aim to make the lessons interesting enough that the students want to play as much as possible.
