Overview:
I am a multiple woodwind performer and an educator with a strong European background in music theory, aural skills, and music history. I hold BM and MM in saxophone performance and recently graduated with my second MM in multiple woodwind performance and pedagogy. I am a very passionate teacher with years of experienced. I also stay active as a performer which I believe is a very important aspect of a good pedagogue. I currently teach saxophone, clarinet, flute and piano in Phoenix area, play with the 300th Army Band in California, and Scottsdale Community College Musical Theater productions.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching the saxophone since 2008, to both kids and adults, beginners and advanced players. I always like to incorporate music theory and aural skills into my lessons as I believe those subjects are a must in becoming a well-rounded musician. I do not usually follow a book/method page-to-page but rather adjust the curriculum to each and every student. Each on of my students has different goals and aspiration and it would not be fair to them to force them to follow one book/curriculum. Instead, I pick material from various sources, pedagogues. Being a multi instrumentalist I have the advantage of studying with many great professors that gave me the tools to be a great teacher and performer. I often reference flute technique to my saxophone students, and vice versa which only makes them understand a concept more clearly.
METHODS USED
I do not usually follow any method book as every student is different, has different background, goals and aspirations. I try to mix exercises/methods that I use in my practice with materials of accomplished pedagogues. I have my set of warm-ups that I use on saxophone, clarinet, and flute; I often find myself using flute method while playing the saxophone which only pushes my and my students abilities and makes them better musicians. It is very important to have a wide variety of tools and tips to reference while teaching, and having been studying multiple woodwind instruments only helps :)
LESSON STYLE
I tend to be a teacher on a stricter side as that is how my music teachers were back in Europe. I find this style to be working with my students as they do accomplish their goals and win various competitions. Depending on the age and students goals (professional musician or just playing for fun) I adjust my style accordingly. Even if the student only wants to play for their own enjoyment I still find a way to make the material challenging for them to improve their skills, technique, musicianship, and thus make it worth their while.
