I am a music producer from the California Bay Area I have performed in churches to psychedelic music festivals to crappy punk bars and basements My family started me on multiple instruments at a young age I have taken private music lessons from various individuals since the age of 9 Studied recording arts at Diablo Valley College Studied North Indian Classical music on Sitar Currently in a local gigging band called "Broth" Currently working on a solo world music project called "Salt Merchant"
When I was a child I joined a school symphony in the percussion section. I spent three years with the school while also taking private lessons on a drum kit. I had a passion for classical rock and punk music, my step uncle gave me my first drum kit, bass and electric guitar. My father gave me my first acoustic guitar which I played in multiple events during high school. I spend high school band on the drum kit and percussion as well as three years of choir. I studied with private guitar tutors to improve my scales. Later I played in a handful of bands on guitar and started song writing with my instruments at home on my recording gear. I spent at least five years playing for the church band on various instruments as well as vocals. Live music is a huge passion of mine. I study North Indian Classical music with a man in Berkeley who was a life student of Ali Akbar Khan. I pick up any instrument I want and I spent time getting to know it. I have learned some of the banjo and mandolin as well as a bamboo flute and classical arabic Oud/lute.
Music is a whole lifestyle and multi-sense experience. Our everyday lives are full of rhythm and tone. We can discover how to practice with or without our instrument. In order to help students to understand what they are playing on an instrument it is best to show them how to internalize and relate the sounds to their emotions and habits. I focus on the spontaneous discovery of our own inner song. rhythm is the essence of any genre and any expression, no matter what instrument I will show my students how to listen to their "internal drummer". I always recommend to practice at least 5 minutes a day Instead of focusing on what "key" the music is in I prefer to help the student to discover what scale is being used. I feel the western methods of teaching are failing our musicians and leaving them uninspired. Focusing on scales allows the musician to discover how to start writing their own melodies immediately.
I start by helping the student understand what are common scales and rhythms. I help them internalize and memorize the options that are available in the music world. I help them understand and focus on the style of music that pleases them. I show them the alternative possibilities they have to what they feel comfortable playing. I help them to discover the ways in which regular practice with help them attain the goals they have. I give them a realistic view of what they can accomplish. I provide ways the the student can connect with music in the world around them.
