BM, University of Maryland (College Park), Music Education and Masters Degree in Special Education
I have been teaching music in the public schools and private lessons for the past 7 years. I love teaching children and people of all ages how to play and enjoy music! I graduated from the University of Maryland (College Park) in 2009 and I am currently obtaining my Master's in Special Education from Bowie State University. Piano and voice are my primary instruments, but I can also teach beginner guitar, clarinet and violin. I love teaching private lessons and I am excited to share my knowledge and experience with you or your child!
I began teaching during the time I was in college. I love to inspire students with my own love of music! I also use positive reinforcement (such as stickers) to motivate my younger students to practice and perform their songs successfully. I teach a combination of classical and more contemporary music as well as music history and music theory. I also teach my students to compose and improvise their own songs as well as play by ear. My students are encouraged to participate in at least two performances per year. I am always looking to teach new students and share my love of music!
I generally use the Alfred series for teaching piano. For teaching voice I may use a combination of books based on what style of music the student wants to focus on the most. For guitar, violin and clarinet, I use typical beginner books that introduce the fundamental fingerings, chords and notes for that particular instrument as well as basic music terminology. In addition, I sometimes create some of my own unique exercises and materials to supplement these books based on the student's needs.
I love teaching students to learn to read and play music! It is exciting to see each student develop a passion for music as he or she learns to play his or her instrument better! My approach to teaching is to meet the student where they are and help them progress at his or her own pace. I try to provide lots of encouragement and praise as well as helpful advice about how to improve their music skills. I use positive incentives such as stickers when possible and I tailor the instruction based on the student's interests and needs.
