I am an experienced, professional piano instructor who loves teaching piano, the foundational instrument, to children and adults who have a desire to learn and pursue their music. I have lived a life filled with the joy of music and consider it a passion to share this joy. I am from a musical family, my husband is a professional musician and music is a part of my daily life. I have collaborated musically in church, weddings, accompanied choral groups, various bands, etc. over the years, but my true joy lies in teaching. Teaching someone to play the piano is giving a gift for life! The individual will carry it within themselves in countless ways and to be able to sit down at a piano to pour out your joys, pain, anxiety or strength through playing music is the gift that keeps on giving. I hope you will allow me to help you start your journey of music!
I am from a family of musicians and started my music lessons at a young age. I love playing the piano and have accompanied choirs, vocalists, bands, churches, etc. throughout my life. Other than the priceless enjoyment I have gotten out of being able to play the piano, my greatest pleasure has been teaching young and old how to play, appreciate and enjoy the piano instrument. Seeing the students at the recital, the pride and accomplishment when they showcase what their hard work has accomplished is an absolute great joy!
My methods, practices and philosophies are first to get to know the student. What are their goals, expectations, likes/wants/needs, etc. - as I get to know the student, I will tailor the teaching materials to them. Whether it is Leonard, Bastien, Alfred (I have used them all), an eighth note is an eighth note, but you can play an eighth note in pop, rock, classical, jazz, show tunes, etc.. I do ask my students to set a goal and work to reach it. Furthermore, I do ask, but not require, my students to participate and perform in recitals - I have found recitals to be an invaluable teaching tool. My goal is for the student to enjoy their lessons so they stick with their piano lessons until it flows naturally and they hear the music - then they are hooked!
I am a professional licensed educator, as well as, a mother of two grown children, both of which influence my teaching method. My style is individualized to the student's personality - what works for one may not work for another. One student may be very driven to learn theory and do written homework, while another may find written homework to be agonizing but love learning new pieces of music - I will work with both styles, with the same result - each student learns to play the instrument and learns the required theory to be able to play the piano, while hopefully enjoying it along the way! We have to remember we are dealing with music here - it should be joyful and pleasurable.
