ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
Master Degree: Syracuse University, Bachelor Degree: College of Performing Arts in Graz
Overview:

My philosophy of teaching music is that every child and adult can learn to play an instrument. I am passionate about teaching music including all genres of music. I love collaborating with different styles, cross-cultural and groups like the photo of my band students working on our Indigenous music project with a local Native group. I earned my under graduate degree at the College of Performing Arts in Graz, Austria as a flute performance major. Besides teaching in the Austrian school system I performed in chamber music groups and had solo tours of southern Austria. When I came back to the States I earned my masters in band/music instruction from Syracuse University. I have also performed with my group; 2 flutes and cello all around Central NY. I was member of the CNY Flute ensemble for years until COVID. The Video posted is of me performing with the SY pep band for Christmas for the rescue mission. I believe in giving back to community.

EXPERIENCE

I taught classical flute and recorder in the Austrian school system and music schools for 15 years. Later, I was the band director and music teacher for the grades 4-12 grades in the Syracuse City Schools. I conducted a concert band, jazz band and had over 70 students in my band programs. Keyboards class, music history and general music were also a part of my teaching experience. My students have participated NYSSMA solo competitions, All-City Band, All- County band and All-State Bands. I enjoy helping musicians find their potential and teach them to be better musicians. Music is a great tool to learn discipline and concentration. And it can be incredibly rewarding and confidence building. And I have been teaching privately for over 25 years.

METHODS USED

I use a combination of books for flute students since they are better suitable for flute study. Some of them are for example; Gariboldi execerses and Trevor Wye along with several books with simple flute solos for beginners. For more advanced students there is also i wide variety of Etude books such as Kohler etudes or Anderson studies. I use as well as solos up to level 6 from various Baroque, Classical, 2oth century Composers for flute. I also have a jazz unit for flute performance. The students and I decide together on the choice of flute solos. Duets are included in my teaching program for my students

LESSON STYLE

I believe in meeting students where they are at and building their musicianship on the student's strengths. Since I have years of teaching I can help students set realistic goals and know where they need more support and teach them how to be independent in practicing. And it is important to set goals and high expectations to bring students to their full potential. I know how to encourage and reward students with their progress and know how to give feed-back on where they need to lean in. My joy comes from the achievements of my students.

I have worked with Julie in public school music for years. She was always creative and innovative in her programming. A dedicated and committed teacher, she has high expectations for her students, and for herself. I admire her musicianship, her passion for the music, and her exacting standards, coupled with her skill and caring as a teacher. Students at our school loved band, and working with Julie!

My fourteen-year-old son began thirty-minute weekly flute lessons with Julie about fifteen months ago. He only had basic knowledge of playing the flute, i.e., knew a handful of notes and could barely read music, prior to starting lessons. Julie's instruction has completely transformed his playing. She was able to meet his ability where it was at and gently move him forward. He looks forward to his lesson every week and is excited about his improvement. He proudly told us this past week that his senior high band director gave him a solo in next month's Christmas concert. I most highly recommend flute lessons with Julie.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
