I am an experienced woodwind teacher and in the past seven years I have helped many students with their school music, audition materials, and/or music for pure enjoyment. I hold both my bachelor and Master's degree in music education and I've had many years of band teaching experience. I have been the member of several local symphonic band and pit orchestra of Long Island, NY region until 2011.
My private teaching experience dates back to my late high school years and after I graduated from college I began to teach professionally and I also include a wider range of instrumentations. I specialized in woodwinds and I can also teach novice piano and brass instruments as well. In my seven years of teaching experiences, I had helped many students with their auditions and musical growth. Some of them made All-State and/or junior All-State, many students made into All-County bands.
I consider myself to be both traditional and old school at certain times, however. I firmly believe that students will lose interest in music quickly if I always teach all students the same techniques and follow conventional music theory. For piano lessons I usually begin without any books until they are comfortable with the weight and the feel of the piano keys. After that I really like to use the John Thompson's piano book grade 1, and I have had many good results with my students in the past. For my instrumental students it depends on the students' age. I would do things differently. But most of time I would use the rubank elementary method to start off. To me it is the most effective method book to use.
It is very important for the music instructor to learn the nature and characteristics of his/her students. It is crucial that the teacher can make adjustments to teach according to the nature of their students, some students can learn really fast and may have a desire to be pushed harder, but many students are either normal or may require a longer time to digest the material. I encourage students to practice in order to help their progress and I always model for students in the lesson. I believe that the students will learn best through listening and imitating.
