While I do not have formal education I have been playing music and instruments since 1998 in various forms. Typically in church bands but also in punk rock style bands and even a country band. This experience along with a proven record of teaching and instructing other musicians has helped shape the way I work with students.
I am a passionate instructor who loves working with students of all ages and experience levels. I have had the opportunity to be a part of many church bands big and small as well as play for various other bands (country, punk rock, pop). I even had the opportunity to open for the band Skillet. Being able to instruct and teach is one of the joys of my life. I enjoy seeing the music/instrument "click" for the student as it did for me. I enjoy the structure and creativity playing music can afford a person.
My teaching experience has dated back to 2002 when I began instructing professionally. Since then I have had the opportunity to help students reach their goals. I am a person who believes that if you are passionate about your craft you will see progress. I believe that music should be fun as well as work. It is something that I have seen time and time again as student progress from the beginner stages to more advanced stages. The student should be enjoying the lesson as well as learning. Giving the student key takeaways each lesson is important.
Depending on the instrument I am instructing on I will take each student on their own path. I typically spend some time getting to know the student, understand their desires and passions for music, and their own personal style. When I understand that I can gauge where the lessons should go. The first few lessons typically cover the basics of the instrument and a "get to know you" setting. Of course I always try to give the student some form of "homework" or things to practice. Being a part of that journey is a pleasure!
I believe patience coupled with encouragement can be a recipe for success. When the student develops their own passion for music and their instrument their abilities tend to soar. I attempt to set realistic goals for the student but I am very adaptable and flexible. I still remember being able to strum my first song on the guitar. After that I was hooked! I believe in understanding the fundamentals and learning the technical aspects are important, however I have seen firsthand how enjoying music and the instrument and being able to play a song and not just a scale can lead to an increased desire to play and learn more.
