2012 "Most Talented" Guitarist in Classical Spectrum

Overview:

Hello! I am a Lutenist, Guitarist, Bassist & Lecturer with 20+ years of tutelage experience in several plucked Instruments. For me, working with students across all capacities is highly rewarding work - perhaps my life's work. I began teaching the Bass Guitar at age 14, mostly to my peers and yet-to-be colleagues. Shortly after turning 16, I was invited to play Jazz/Fusion with a small Ensemble at Disneyland. By 18, I had moved on to the Guitar in many varieties, including the Conventional Classical Guitar, both in the Early and Modern Style. As a Guitarist, we encounter much Early Music, generally meant for Lute or Cello - This is where my Lute journey began. At this point in time (nearly 20 years later) I embraced the Lute as my primary Instrument and hope to teach you to play as well. As of 2023, I give recitals and lectures all across the State of California as well as teach several plucked Instruments.

EXPERIENCE

I have worked with students and professionals alike for many years. There are times that a player needs to focus on technique - other times, interpretation. Music can be complex with many moving parts (literally.) In my personal experience, a student-teacher relationship is based on mutual goals and understanding with communication being the bridge between the two. My students are in a sense, my responsibility. That is to say that their development, happiness and satisfactions are quite important to me. I have watched many of my students excel and develop their own musical identity, both professionally and as an avid amateur.

METHODS USED

In my personal and professional opinion, all students deserve individualized lesson plans. Methodology is the vessel for teaching, and without a strong method, one can not teach. I do pride myself on creating lesson plans solely based on the players level, goals, abilities and choice of repertoire. Method books generally contain the "how," but not the "why." The "how" is simple, but to understand "why" is different all together. For instance, knowing "why" the thumb needs correct posture will tell you "how" to place it. I find that the best materials come from getting to know your student. In my lesson plans, we will examine historical documents regarding "plucked" Instruments and how to properly play them to a satisfactory standard for the player & listener.

LESSON STYLE

My road to teaching starts with getting to know my student. It is the music they listen to, play, or wish to play that helps me to identify specifically what aspect of their Instrument they wish to explore, expand on and refine. I do believe that goals in the form of pieces of music as a graduating accomplishment are absolutely necessary. Initially, simple and easy to understand repertoire is introduced as to develop the necessary fundamentals. As time moves on, more pieces ranging in difficulty should very added, but only if PROGRESS is desired by the Student or player.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
