Overview:
I'm a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. In 2007, I graduated from George Mason University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Guitar Performance. I have performed all over the countryside with bands that play anything from jazz - pop - rock. I can teach any style of music. My primary instrument is guitar with a concentration in jazz. I have extensive knowledge in music theory, jazz theory, and music literacy. I'm comfortable teaching any age group with any experience level. I'm excited to work with you : ).
EXPERIENCE
B.A in Music from George Mason University Masters of Music Education from Portland State University Over 15 years of private lesson experience with instrumentation ranging from electric guitar to flute. 3 years of experience as a middle school and high school band director. Currently the high school band director at Westview High School Extensive experience with audio engineering and recording production. Played in numerous groups ranging from jazz to pop to blues. I have performed on many stages throughout the country.
METHODS USED
When it comes to strategies regarding teaching I use many methods. I usually will start students understanding the fundamentals of music literacy. In order to achieve the introductory points of this we will work out of a method book like a Hal Leonard Beginner Guitar Method 1. We will understand the importance of understanding how to count rhythms and read pitches correctly. I also focus highly on the correct techniques of the instrument in order to avoid bad habits in the future. I find it incredibly important to meld these fundamental music ideas along with letting the student pick the style and music they would like to play. It is important the student gets to enjoy the music they are playing and can apply it to a performance expectation that fits their stylistic goal.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is fun and laid back. I want students to see their potential by playing the music that they love. If a student wants to learn Taylor Swift, then we will learn the things to help that student achieve those goals, and they will be able to do this in a relaxed setting with a teacher that understands the difficulties of playing music for the first time. I'm a musician who has learned many styles of music himself, and I understand that there are many avenues for a musician to become a master at their craft. There is not one way, and my approach is to be adaptive to the students needs.

Unbelievably Awesome. My daughter is a beginner and has some special needs. Justin is more than patient and helpful while being completely thorough and pushing her (in a good way) to try harder. He is encouraging and teaches effectively. I am very pleased. More important, so is my daughter. Thank you Musika! So grateful we found your service and connected with Justin. We highly recommend him.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
