BA, Elizabethtown College, Music: Piano/Organ Performance
2016, 2017 - Mary Emmenheimer Elizabethtown College Music Scholarship
Originally from central New Jersey, I attended and recently graduated Elizabethtown College, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Music. While at college, I studied piano with Debra Ronning, piano teaching/pedagogy with Cheryl Braun, and organ with Anthony Ciucci. I also gave two solo recitals, where I got the chance to perform an original composition, and was a member of various ensembles, performing not only piano, but also on clarinet, percussion, and singing. I also accompanied the college choir. I now live in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where I am very excited to begin my career as a musician and music teacher.
Sharing the gift of music with others is a great joy, and I love to be a part of it. I began my teaching while as a student, where I taught several students ranging from 7 years old to adults. I learned how to form lesson plans and make the most out of each lesson. I was also required to submit lesson reports to faculty so they could advise on how to improve and become a better teacher. Since then, I have begun teaching privately and at a few music schools. Although I am still new to piano teaching, I am very passionate and knowledgeable about how to provide good lessons to others, so that they can see their progress as a pianist, and take pride in being a musician too.
With most of my beginning students, I like to use Alfred's Premier series. However, I have used other series such as Faber or Bastien with some other students, especially if they have had prior lessons and were taught on those methods. I always like to use lesson, performance, and theory books, to allow students to not only learn new concepts as they progress, but also learn pieces that can become performance-ready, and gain a wider understanding for the theory behind the musical concepts. With adults and more intermediate students, I try to select music similar to what they have studied before or would be interested in, and plan lessons around those pieces, progressing to new composers and styles of music along the way.
My overarching goal as a piano teacher is to have my students appreciate music and its place in the world around us. I want to guide my students to the music that inspires them, and has them enjoying the music they are making. I look to make lessons educational, productive, but also simply as fun as possible. To me, private instruction should be a way for students to grow and feel safe, not be practicing music they don't enjoy just because the teacher says so. I also have been working on creating semester lesson goals with my students, so that we have a big idea to work towards, and can feel those accomplishments being reached over time, promoting their success in lessons.
