Started violin age 3 (Suzuki method) Piano age 5 Drums age 11 Attended Graceland university for percussion and was section leader in orchestra, band, marching band and principle trap set player in jazz band Attended musicians institute for recording and production Worked as a professional producer and composer of music for television since 2010. Music placements include television shows such as: Top Chef, Below Deck, E! News, Monday night football, x games Los Angeles. As well as numerous commercials.
I try to see what skills the beginning learner may already have. Then I try to attach rudimentary skills to the players natural skill set. This is my basic approach. I teach both ear training and formal theory. I also examine popular music with students to keep techniques current with current trends in music. When teaching DAW production technique, I focus on tuning and refining a students, "production" ear or to instantly be able to refine a mix of music to a professional level. This is done by applying many techniques to many different audio sources or songs.
Private lessons with an interest in the students interest. The student has to be excited to learn the techniques to begin with. This is especially true with recording techniques using DAW's. Many students who pursue this already have an interest. Because if this the teaching and learning process is greatly amplified and learning can sometimes even go both ways. When teaching drums I approach every lesson like it is new. I always have a new technique to bring to the table. I never hold it against a student if they don't practice. Every session has the ability for learning to take place.
