MFA, California Institute of the Arts, Composition & Performance BFA, California Institute of the Arts, World Music Performance
Hello, I am a passionate and dedicated musician & teacher with both a bachelors and masters degree from California Institute of the Arts. I am a composer and multi-instrumentalist and I am dedicated to teaching and helping my students succeed. Every student is different so I make a point to craft every lesson to the individual and help them obtain whatever it is they want to get out of music, whether it be to just learn a simple song they like, or to help guide and mentor them on their path to making music a career.
I began teaching guitar lessons back in 2008 and have been doing so for almost 10 years. After my bachelors I was then hired by the Community Arts Partnership through CalArts and have been teaching/facilitating workshops throughout Los Angeles teaching West African drumming, singing and dance. I have taught all ages from kindergarten to adults. I have also had the privilege to teach in the Juvenile Justice System, The Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and other community based centers throughout Los Angeles. In 2012 I had the opportunity to go to Mexico City and teach a 2 day workshop with local music students at the Cultural Arts Center which culminating into a final performance of the taught material.
Every person is different as every student is different, so I make a point to cater to the individual and not get locked into an umbrella method of teaching. I make myself available to each student to ask questions and get the most information out of whatever subject we might be discussing/learning. I make sure that each students needs get met by determining on day 1 of lessons what they want to get out of music and the instrument they are learning. If someone wants to just learn a simple pop or rock song on the guitar then that's what we'll do. Music is about having fun, so I always make sure that every lesson is both instructive and enjoyable.
First, I will ask my student what they want to do today. We are all subject to feeling differently about certain subjects every day and for example, might feel more inclined to learn scales one day and then maybe learn about the history of Jazz music another day, so it's my job to cater to those desires and let the student dictate the path our lessons take. I'm solely here for the student and not any self interest. I have a wealth of knowledge about all kinds of music from all over the world and I'm here to feed any and every students thirst for information and instruction.
