ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

Music Education Bachelor Degree: Illinois Wesleyan University

Master of Music: Orchestral Conducting, Illinois State University

Awards:

Dean's List

Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society

Overview:

I am a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and loves showing that making music can be both rewarding and fun! I have a degree in Music Education from Illinois Wesleyan University, and I am on my last semester to get my Master's in Orchestral Conducting from Illinois State University. I have sung in numerous choir, played jazz and classical trumpet all through college, and have a burning interest in Music Theory and how it relates to playing. I have been a guest conductor for choirs and high school orchestras, as well as an adjudicator for State competitions.

EXPERIENCE

I have taught privately on and off for the past 5 years. I generally encourage students to practice consistently and efficiently to achieve the results they desire. Being a multi-instrumental musicians has given me the advantage to use the different disciplines to teach in different methods, instructional languages, and pieces in order to reach the students. This has given me a versatile teaching style that generally allows me to associate well with my students. I am an open teacher and I believe that one of the main keys to an increase in performance and interest for making music is finding things that the student wants to play. I find that this is the best way to start and maintain a successful pattern of practice and performance. I'm always looking for students!

METHODS USED

I start my students with a single lesson where I gain a knowledge about the student's musical abilities and personality. I don't generally start with a single method book, because I believe that in individual lessons, the methods used should be tailored to fit the student. I will pull from Essential Elements, Accent on Achievement, and Standard of Excellence, as well as writing and devising my own warm ups and methods. For beginning students, I generally focus on making sure that their fundamentals are strong before we move onto the more intricate details.

LESSON STYLE

I am a teacher who looks to make music both fun and rewarding. As well as teaching the student how to make beautiful music, I also try and tie in our lessons as a way to becoming a better citizen. The habits that we form as a musicians will help us as individuals. Things like setting and working towards goals, tracking and monitoring progress, and educating ourselves beyond the lesson room are all things that will serve my students as individuals, no matter what discipline or situation that they will find themselves in down the road.
