Working towards BA, Chatham University, Music focusing in Vocal performance
2017 - Minna Kaufman Ruud Scholarship 2017- performed with River City Brass Band at the Christmas Brasstacular 2018 - Performed with DCINY and Eric Whitacre at Carnegie Hall
I am a student at Chatham University studying Vocal Performance, International studies with a focus in Africa, and minoring in Psychology. I am passionate about music, having learned 7 instruments on top of practicing voice, and love to share the knowledge that I have gained. I have been performing in plays and musicals, and as a soloist since 2009 and continue to do so today. Performing at Carnegie Hall with a choir conducted by Eric Whitacre was one of the greatest experiences in my life as a musician.
I have experience teaching music all over the world. I have travelled to Canada, Russia, and Swaziland to work with children. I have taught guitar, voice, and general music lessons to those children. Additionally, I have been teaching guitar lessons here in the States for over two years. I love teaching music and think that everyone deserves an equal opportunity to quality music education. While I don't have a lot of professional teaching experience I am currently learning how to teach music in school and love to research new teaching methods and ideas. I enjoy teaching people of all ages, but I specialize in children and young adults. I love to have fun with my students and and show them how to enjoy music, even when you're just practicing!
For beginner students, I like to start with general music understanding before jumping into the specifics. I will make sure the students can read and understand music so that when we start with harder materials it will be easier and more fun. I will make sure that the students have songs and music books that they will enjoy learning and performing. I will leave it up to the students if they wish to do a recital. If they choose to, I will help them prepare a professional and fun repertoire to perform! As we progress through the lessons I will assign songs but also take requests from the students. Most importantly, I will make sure the student is having fun and learning throughout the entire lesson.
I look forward to watching my students learn and mature in their music. It is important that each student feels comfortable and not rushed in their learning progression. Therefore, I will make sure each student is learning at their own pace and feels comfortable enough to stop me if I am moving too fast. I will work with my students to set realistic goals for the week. Additionally, I seek to find ways to make practice fun and individualized to each students so that they want to practice when they get home. I hope to find what inspires each student individually in order to tailor the lessons to their specific wants and needs.
