University of Minnesota, major French, minor music
I studied piano and violin during elementary, middle and high school, playing with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra in the 70's. In college I pursued voice and violin and studied music theory, history of opera, orchestra, chorus. I was interested in acting and musical theatre and did further studies at MacPhail School of Music. (Minneapolis, Minnesota). I performed in night clubs, for weddings, churches and conferences over the years. Eventually, I sang and wrote songs on guitar and performed for many New Thought churches from 1980s - 2000's. My music group AURORA performed for conferences and we sang songs of personal and planetary transformation, along with our band. I began teaching in 1999 and Minneapolis and with my moves, I taught in Ft Worth, Eugene, OR and Denver. I am currently also teaching piano, violin, and voice at Neighborhood Music in Denver, CO.
I have had a lifetime of performing, recording, teaching music! I studied piano, then violin, then became a singer songwriter in the 80's and 90's. I have performed at weddings, bars, nightclubs, conferences and churches. I began teaching in the 2000's and have enjoyed passing on the skills and the experience of learning music to my students. I am fun, I relate to kids well, and I am devoted to raising their self esteem by praising their accomplishments. I correct them in balance with praising them. I love them and they feel it!
I use probably more of the Faber series than any other, but also use Bastien and Alfred piano books. I sometimes recommend all four,(Lesson, Theory, Tecnique, Performance) but often just use two - Lesson and Theory. Most kids can handle 3 songs a week, but sometimes only 2. I move methodically through the books, making sure they understand thoroughly an idea before moving too quickly ahead. I draw from many resources for recital songs -- especially if they are showing an interest in classical music. I have them practice their songs 3 times a day for a minimum of 5 days a week. I have fun with them, for learning happens when we are having fun!
My style is light and cheery - I make the kids feel important and I acknowledge their progress regularly. I am not a knuckle-rapping teacher. Discipline comes naturally out of a love of learning and I notice when they are practicing and let them know and that induces more and continuous practicing. I don't guilt-trip them if they don't - I use a "try to do more or better this week" approach if they have a low practice amount last week! Keeping the lessons fun and enjoyable helps kids want to come back and feel good again!
