I am a classically trained pianist with a special love for sacred music and Rag Time. From my early youth and into college, I studied classical and rag time piano, but I obtained my degree in art. Over the years, I have taught private piano and voice lessons and conducted several choirs and even accompanied choirs. Lately, I play piano performances regularly because it is my passion. For vocal performance, I am classically trained as well, but prefer music theatre belt technique and some pop styles. I love all kinds of music from every genre.
I have been teaching private piano and voice lessons to young and adult students for over 18 years. I teach music because I believe all human beings connect to it and feel something overtime they hear music. This motivates me to continue teaching as much as possible. I believe in teaching a diverse number of techniques and genres from Pop to Jazz to classical to my music students to gain a wide variety of techniques and general love for the many styles of music. I also believe it is important to use various styles of music in my art classroom to supplement my teaching style. I look forward to working with your piano or vocal student.
For beginning piano students I always like to start lessons with keyboard familiarity, vocabulary and recognition. we play games and use rhythm sticks and learn patterns and placement on the piano. I also start with finger placement and strengthening skills with repetitive Finger Phrases and John Thompson basic levels 1 through 3 songs. I also teach students how to "FEEL" the key signatures with scales and drills that help them become familiar with the keyboard. Over time, the students are given confidence building songs that are repetitive and easy to memorize with basic chords. Eventually, when they are ready, students move on to more complex songs in a variety of genres that have moving melody lines and more complex note patterns to create more beautiful music.
The best part of teaching for me is seeing students transform from unsure beginners to confident musicians with enthusiasm and passion for their own chosen taste in music. I know students can drive the lessons with their choices, so I let them select music that will keep them coming back for more challenges. Even still, I want them to have the exposure to diverse training and music styles to expand their own style. Eventually, I want students to take ownership of their practice and use tried and true techniques to become great musicians. I think learning music should be enjoyable and fun, so I am always coming up with engaging activities to helps students learn in unique ways.
