Teaching Assistantship awarded at Temple University
Overview:
I am a teacher who loves to share the joy of music with others. I graduated from Temple University in 2006 with a Master of Music degree in String Pedagogy and from Shenandoah University in 2004 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance. I am a former member of the Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra and have performed for the Stewartstown Summer Theater pit orchestra. I have toured Europe with various performing groups. I regularly perform for weddings and church services. While I teach students from age 3 and up, I specialize in lessons for preschool and elementary age students.
EXPERIENCE
I began student teaching in the late 90’s when I was in high school. I continued to teach on the weekends throughout college and graduate school at Joyful Sounds School of Music. While studying String Pedagogy at Temple University, I taught for the Community Music Scholars Program, a program in conjunction with the Philadelphia public schools allowing low income students to have private lessons at a reduced rate. After graduate school, I continued to teach at Joyful Sounds School of Music and started my own home studio. In 2016, I decided to teach only at my home studio.
METHODS USED
For my youngest students, age 7 and under, I begin with Adventures in Violinland, a wonderful method written by Shirley Givens, instructor at Peabody Preperatory. This teaches note reading with a solfegg system. It has a strong emphasis on technique. For beginners ages 8 and up, I use either Essential Elements or Sound Innovations, usually matching it with whatever the school district uses that the student lives in. As the students progress, I use the Suzuki repertoire as well as various scale and technique books.
LESSON STYLE
My goal for each and every student is for them to become proficient enough on their instrument that they can enjoy it for the rest of their lives. This can be achieved through lessons and regular practice. Those who practice regularly tend to be more successful and progress at a faster rate. I encourage older school age students to participate in school orchestra and those who are excelling in their instruments to audition for local youth orchestras. I hold a yearly recital to give every student an opportunity to perform.
