Overview:
Music has always been a huge part of who I am. I am as passionate about teaching as I am about performing. I love to see the joy in a students face when they accomplish something new. In May of 2018 I graduated from The University of Hartford, with a Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance. I am so grateful of all the opportunities that music has given me. Because of my career as a musician I have been able to travel the world. I have performed in The Alion Baltic International Music Festival in Europe. I have lived in New England for four years, and spent a summer in Boston performing. I even had the opportunity to sing in Carnegie Hall and Radio City. I spent two years as a show choir director while in college. I am amazed by how much my students have accomplished in the two years I worked with them. I am looking forward to continuing teaching and motivating my students through music.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching voice lessons my senior year of high school. When I got to college I began work as a show choir director in Hartford, CT. I have learned so much from my students. I have learned to teach in a way that students of all ages will understand. An example of this is teaching a young student how to use their head voice when singing high notes. This is important because a student can damage their vocal cords if they use chest voice high up in the scale. A warm up I use to take care of this issue is asking the student to make a fire siren noise and I go up an octave (ex. do-do, re-re,mi-mi). In an adult I will ask the student to yawn (lifting the soft palate) and sigh at the same time. This is a very simple correction to make in students of all ages. The important thing is to create a nurturing environment in which a student will best understand what I am teaching them. I like to encourage my students to challenge themselves. I believe that if a student is serious about a career in music, they should be ambitious about entering competitions and taking part in auditions.
METHODS USED
My methods of teaching vary depending on how old my student is and their current level. For example, with a young beginner I will start off by teaching them the scale. (DO RE MI FA SOL LA TI DO) and showing them how each note correlates with a specific pitch. I will then sing the warm up with them a few times until they can do it on their own. I also like to do rhythm exercises with my younger students for example I will clap a rhythm and have them clap it back to me. I will assign repertoire that is appropriate for their level. An example of this could be the little mermaid song 'Part of Your World'. If I am teaching an intermediate student I will do warm ups up and down the octaves on vowels e-eh-ah-oh-ooh, I will also do staccato exercises as well as teaching breathing techniques. Adequate repertoire will be assigned perhaps "Caro Mio Ben". If I am teaching an advanced student, I will work on stage presence, as well as proper singing posture and exercises to help transfer between passaggios (registers) in their voice.
LESSON STYLE
I like to keep my students motivated. I like to set goals, not only for myself as a teacher, but also for my students. The reason for this is that if the student is working towards a goal they have a motivation to keep moving forward. An example of this could be the student's goal is to attend an audition three times a year, or they want to learn how to sing for a school talent show. I want to show my students that you can accomplish any goal you set for yourself as long as you set the time apart to practice and learn as much as you can from me during our lessons.
