I am a musician hoping to pass on my passion for music to anyone willing to accept it. In 2019, I graduated from Nazareth College in Rochester, NY, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Business. Music found me in middle school when I started playing saxophone and I realized I had a natural talent for it. I was a men-tee to professional gospel saxophonist, Raymond Boyce, when I lived in Atlanta, Georgia. I played many solo performances, joined wind ensemble, played in the All-State band each year and went to the National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana. Toward the end of High School, I grew a new taste for guitar and silently practiced it behind my saxophone, in college, until I was good enough to perform with it. Now I've played shows all around upstate New York as a lead guitarist in several bands and released an album with my primary band, Baker Street. My list of genres played include: classical, jazz, blues, rock, R&B, soul, funk, reggae, folk, country, pop, hip-hop, and more.
As a performing musician, we are always giving and receiving knowledge to our colleagues and pals. I've been teaching people things about music since the end of high school, when I began to really feel like I had a grasp on what "good playing" sounds like. It wasn't until college when I sat down with someone and gave them a free one-on-one lesson for the first time. At that moment, even though my primary passion is performing music, I felt ecstatic that I was actually able to teach someone something that they'll remember throughout their days as a musician. In 2020, I teamed up with a music lesson studio called Legrand Music Studios, based out of Knoxville, Tennessee. I have been teaching online through them and also have had a few private students. The best part about teaching music is seeing the positive energy that gets created when the student really feels they have learned something.
I will be taking students of all ages; young or mature. Unless the student is a very beginner, I essentially go about teaching in the same method with each individual. I WILL TEACH THE STUDENT WHATEVER THEY WANT TO LEARN. Thats right. I've found that learning music is more fun for the student when you get to play what you already know, are comfortable with, or want to learn. It works like this: if the student wants to learn a guitar solo, I will show them the fundamentals of what it takes to understand it, break it down, and execute it. They would learn the scales being used, practice routines for building technique, stamina, etc., and by the end of it they will learn the solo and how to improvise their own solo with those learned skills. This can be applied to anything the student would like to learn.
My teaching style is fairly simple. Whatever the student wants to learn, I will do my best to teach them how to take and conquer each step to get there. I never really had any formal music lessons until college, but I know that when I had a teacher, I wished that I could just learn what I wanted to learn. I want my students to feel absolutely comfortable when we're in a lesson. I believe learning something that they already have a passion for, instead of hitting them with things they aren't interested in, will help them progress at a healthier level because they will be more willing to practice. I want my students to feel encouraged and excited about coming to lessons because they know they'll learn something they are interested in!
We love Karis!! He is patient, he is great teaching the guitar and helping my son understand the chords and notes!
Karis is great! He is very patient with a beginner, like myself, and always encouraging, through out the lesson. He’s very versatile in his guitar ability, yet able to meet the student where they are, in their ability. He is friendly, punctual, and shows up with an overall positive attitude, at every meeting.
