Bachelor Degree: Valparaiso University
I am a music nerd! I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education with a focus on voice. I have been singing ever since I was 5 years old and chose to continue singing professionally once I entered college and continue to do so post college. During my undergrad, I was the president of the Valparaiso University chorale and a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the national men's music fraternity. I continue to sing professionally in the Grand Rapids Symphony Chorus during my own time and continue to rehearse varying pieces to challenge myself and hone my skills as a performer and educator.
My teaching experience goes back to college when I first started with student teaching. I taught at a middle/high school which gave me the experience of working with older students. Post college I worked at a private music studio with 15 students under my instruction ranging from ages 7-20 years old. I am currently working with elementary students ages 5-13 and have experience working with singing and making music with this age group. I have received private voice instruction myself for four years while studying in undergrad, and performed a variety of repertoire from classical, to opera, to musical theatre, all in professional performance settings.
For beginning students, I like to begin with the importance of posture, vocal health, and breathing techniques. Building these early foundations to then hone and have for future instruction is extremely valuable to maintaining a healthy singing style. Once students are comfortable with these skills, we can begin really looking into the music. Based on student's skill levels, pieces will be suggested/given to students. Students will be expected to practice at home outside of lessons in order to best benefit from lesson time.
I am a very patient and excited teacher. I love seeing students succeed, and I love seeing student's "lightbulb" moments. I try to approach things in a lot of different ways, depending on the needs of the student, their age, and how well they are able to grasp different concepts and ideas. Lessons are individualized for students; no two students will receive the same lesson, even if they are rehearsing the same piece. Students are given the differentiation they need to accomodate their age and skill.
