Overview:

Ms. Kate started to learn piano at the age of four. Her music education started in Japan, and continued after she immigrated to the United States about 30 years ago. She started as a classical player and expanded her music to pop, jazz and blues. She had studied child development and psychology which helps her to assess student's development level and adjust her lesson plans. She combines her knowledge and skills in music with her knowledge in child development to maximize the student's learning.

EXPERIENCE

Ms. Kate is an experienced with teaching experience over 25 years. She has taught in the public and private schools (K-12) to college. She has been providing private piano lessons to students age 3 through adults. She is certified by Music Teachers Association of California and is allowed to work with students aiming for Certificates of Merit (CM). She has passion in teaching and music. Being a piano teacher combines both of these passions. Her goal is to develop student's love for music and skills to enjoy piano playing, so that music would be a treasure to last student's lifetime.

METHODS USED

Ms. Kate caters lesson plans to individual student's goals, passion, and abilities. Generally, the first focus is to teach students skills to read music. She believes that ability to read music is one of the most important skills student can learn from music education. Ms. Kate's goal is to guide her students so that they learn methodologies and skills so that they could be independent players beyond lessons. Ms. Kate has developed her own methods to enable students as young as 3 to learn how to play the piano. Her youngest 3 year old student learned basic music reading and piano skills in just 2 months.

LESSON STYLE

Ms. Kate is focused of developing student's joy of playing music. She chooses materials which suit each student's interest. She incorporates various activities so that students can enjoy their lessons. These activities include drawing, coloring, dancing, singing, etc. This helps to boost students progress and motivation. She also encourage students' performance in recitals - formal, informal, or even for family and friend. Recitals are great to boost students' confidence and self esteem, which is great not only in music education but for students' life.
