Hi! Im Kate! I am a jazz vocalist and instrumentalist and teacher from Houston TX. I started my musical journey at Houston's High School for the Performing and Visual arts where I concentrated my studies in flute, but ultimately fell in love with singing. I am a 2019-2022 Downbeat Magazine Student Music Award Winner, a 2018 & 2019 YoungArts Winner in jazz voice, and I've performed at various venues including the 2018 Newport Jazz Festival, 2022 SXSW Festival, and the world renowned Birdland Jazz Club in New York City. I received my undergraduate degree in jazz voice at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music and I am currently pursuing my masters degree at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City.
I began teaching 2 years ago during my undergrad years and fell in love with sharing the joy of music and singing. As a young kid, taking lessons myself, I constantly was seeking to learn different types of music and always felt like I could never find the right teacher who could help me expand my musical knowledge in the ways I wanted. Because I have a background in instrumental music, I truly believe in the importance of a foundation in theory, ear training skills, and music reading. I always encourage students to bring in their own repertoire that they are excited to work on and practice - my main goal is to foster a healthy work ethic and love for music. I am knowledgeable about competitions and performance opportunities and I believe real world experience is paramount to becoming a well rounded musician. I am always looking for passionate, curious, and excited students of all ages!
I always like to follow my students curiosities and guide them to learning foundational techniques through material they are passionate about. Cookie-cutter books and songs are not one-size-fits-all and I truly believe in an individualized lesson plan for all my students. I incorporate theory, historical knowledge, ear training, and music reading into my lessons at all ages and levels. I additionally have extensive experience in childcare and early childhood education so I am knowledgable on keeping young learners engaged and excited in lessons!
I love to let my students interests guide our lessons, its how I fell in love with my art and I think I think your own passion should lead your discoveries. That being said, I didn't never need a push to practice fundamentals or things that would make me a more well rounded musician - If you or your child needs a loving push I am there to provide that. I hope to make music and its learning process fun and engaging so that it is a life long hobby or even career! Additionally, i tailor the speed at which we move to new topics based on each individual students needs.
